چکیده

We have analyzed the response of bead-spring chain models in strong elongational flow as the amount of polymer represented by a spring s changed. We examined the longest relaxation time of the chains which is used to quantify the strength of the flow in terms of a Weissenberg umber. A chain with linear springs can be used to predict the longest relaxation time of the nonlinear chains if the linear spring constant is modified orrectly. We used the expansion of the elongational viscosity in the limit of infinite Weissenberg number to investigate the change of the viscosity s the scale of discretization was changed. We showed that the viscosity is less sensitive to the details of the spring force law because the chain is ully extended at very large Weissenberg number. However, the approach to that infinite Weissenberg number response is dependent both on the ehavior of the spring force at large force and the behavior at small force. New spring force laws to represent the worm-like chain or the freely ointed chain are correct at both of these limits, while other currently used force laws produce and error. We also investigated the applicability of hese expansions to chains including hydrodynamic interactions. Our results suggest that the longest relaxation time may not be the appropriate ime scale needed to non-dimensionalize the strain rate in such highly extended states. 2007 Elsevier B.V. Effects of Excluded Volume and Hydrodynamic Interactions on the Behavior of Isolated Bead-Rod Polymer Chains in Shearing Flow

A detailed study of the effects of hydrodynamic interaction (HI) and excluded volume (EV), on isolated bead-rod chains in shear flows, where the “rods” are mimicked by stiff Fraenkel springs is presented. It is observed that the deformation behavior at weak and intermediate shear rates is qualitatively similar to that observed for polymer chains in the absence of EV and HI, while that at high-s...

Structure of bottle-brush brushes under good solvent conditions: a molecular dynamics study.

We report a simulation study for bottle-brush polymers grafted on a rigid backbone. Using a standard coarse-grained bead-spring model extensive molecular dynamics simulations for such macromolecules under good solvent conditions are performed. We consider a broad range of parameters and present numerical results for the monomer density profile, density of the untethered ends of the grafted flex...

Brownian dynamics simulations with stiff finitely extensible nonlinear elastic-Fraenkel springs as approximations to rods in bead-rod models.

A very stiff finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE)-Fraenkel spring is proposed to replace the rigid rod in the bead-rod model. This allows the adoption of a fast predictor-corrector method so that large time steps can be taken in Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations without over- or understretching the stiff springs. In contrast to the simple bead-rod model, BD simulations with beads and F...

Development of bead-spring polymer models using the constant extension ensemble

We have examined a new method for generating coarse-grained models of polymers. The resulting models consist of bead-spring chains with the spring force law taken from the force-extension behavior in the constant extension ensemble. This method, called the polymer ensemble transformation method, is applied to the freely jointed chain. The resulting model illustrates why current bead-spring chai...

The colloidal force of bead-spring chains in a good solvent.

A recently developed density functional theory (DFT) for tethered bead-spring chains is used to investigate colloidal forces for the good solvent case. A planar surface of tethered chains is opposed to a bare, hard wall and the force exerted on the bare wall is calculated by way of the contact density. Previously, the case of large wall separation was investigated. The density profiles of the u...
